As an independent school in South Africa, we fully embrace our African identity. Our School is enriched by and celebrates the diversity of our whole school community. We are a community of pupils, teachers, staff and parents which implies the adherence by its members to certain shared values. This declaration of our values provides a framework that proactively guides our actions. It also serves as the foundation for a range of policies. As a community, TMC commits itself, and expects all its members to commit to upholding these values in institutional and personal relationships, and in all aspects of community life.
We, the Community of Thomas More College:
Aim to create an inclusive school culture that fosters acceptance and respect for diversity. In doing so, we seek to deepen understanding and knowledge, promote pupil and staff well-being and help everyone achieve their full potential.
Will ensure that the school nurtures an ethos and environment where all are valued and where all views are taken into consideration. This embraces a culture that enables all who teach and learn in the school to review their practices and behaviours, to have the confidence to build on prior experiences and to make appropriate changes.
Are committed to dealing with incidents involving racism (including prejudice and stereotyping), racial harassment, and racist name calling whenever they occur.
Are committed to allowing our community to live in and contribute to a rapidly changing society and to act as responsible, independent children, young people and self-sufficient adults who care about others and their environment.
We therefore endeavour to:
• Reject all forms of discrimination and racism
• Ensure no student, employee, parent, caregiver, or community member should experience discrimination and racism within the learning or working environments of Thomas More College
• Eradicate expressions of discrimination and racism in learning and working environments, and challenging the attitudes that allow them to emerge
• Promote a shared responsibility by all stakeholders
• Work in partnership with parents and the community to allow students to live in, and contribute to, a rapidly changing society and to act as responsible, independent children, young people and self-sufficient adults who care about others.
