International Round Square Organisation
Schools should have a greater purpose beyond preparing students for college and university.
The International Round Square Organisation is based on the theories of experiential educational philosopher Kurt Hahn. Dr. Hahn, one of the twentieth century’s foremost revolutionaries in education, believed that schools should have a greater purpose beyond preparing students for college and university. He believed that it was crucial for young people to prepare for life by having them face it directly and experience it in ways that would demand courage, generosity, imagination, principle and resolution. Round Square is an organization embodying this educational revolution.
Thomas More College is known for its dedication to community service
Thomas More College joined Round Square in 2021 and is presently the only Round Square school in KZN. Over 100 schools belong to the association from countries as diverse as Japan, Peru, Kenya and Thailand.
As a round-square school, we commit to preparing our young people, tomorrow’s leaders, as passionate champions for a better future today. All Round Square schools share a commitment to character education and experiential learning built around the 6 Round Square Pillars: International understanding, Environmental Stewardship, Democracy, Adventure, Leadership and Service.
Kurt Hahn, the founder of Round Square, believed firmly in challenging young people to realise their full potential, and to do this outside the classroom.
There is more in you than you know
Hahn’s philosophy of “There is more in you than you know” centres around his promotion of IDEALS: International Understanding; Democracy; Environment; Adventure; Leadership; and Service. Thomas More College has adopted these ideals and is looking forward to the growth and development of our students through this collaboration.
The opportunities that are afforded to our students will develop self-confidence, leadership skills, compassion for those less fortunate, and an understanding of the social and environmental problems facing the youth worldwide. The Round Square ideals and discoveries are worked into the daily curriculum at Thomas More College to ensure that our young people become exceptional citizens of the world.
Round Square Initiatives
There will be opportunities for local and international exchanges that are extremely popular in many schools across the world and these opportunities prove to be a huge growth experience.
