ROUND SQUARE
Thomas More College and Round Square
Thomas More College is proud to be aligned with the Round Square schools’ organisation, a global network of over 200 schools in 50 countries across six continents, united by ambitious and relevant goals for young people. Currently, Thomas More College is the only Round Square school in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Students attending a Round Square school benefit from a legacy framework that emphasises global citizenship, democracy, environmental stewardship, adventure, leadership, and service.
Our shared mission is to nurture every child into a well-rounded individual through academic, physical, cultural, and spiritual experiences.
Tomorrow’s Leaders Today
As a Round Square school, we are committed to preparing our young people as Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, passionate advocates for a positive future. All Round Square schools prioritize character education and experiential learning, built around the six Round Square Pillars:
- International Understanding
- Democracy
- Environmental Stewardship
- Adventure
- Leadership
- Service
Learning and Growth
These Round Square IDEALS are supported by twelve Discoveries that our children will explore on their journey of learning and growth:
- Inquisitiveness
- Tenacity
- Courage
- Compassion
- Inventiveness
- Appreciation of Diversity
- Problem-Solving Skills
- Commitment to Sustainability
- Self-Awareness
- Communication
- Sense of Responsibility
- Teamwork Skills
Round Square
These IDEALS and Discoveries are integrated into the daily curriculum at Thomas More College, ensuring our young people grow into exceptional global citizens.
Round Square organises national and international conferences annually for students in Grades 7, 9, and 11. These student-led conferences foster international collaborations on meaningful projects aligned with the IDEALS.
Additionally, we offer national and international exchanges for pupils in Grades 9 and 10, lasting between two to six weeks, allowing our students to immerse themselves in different schools and cultures. Weekly virtual conferences conducted via Zoom provide opportunities for students to engage with peers worldwide on various topics, broadening their perspectives. Our students also have the chance to plan and host their own conferences.
We are proud to be members of this dynamic, relevant, and inspiring global organization of schools.
President's Award
The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment (affiliated with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award) is a global framework for non-formal education and learning.
The slogan “Get World Ready” encompasses the ideology of the award, which is essentially a social qualification that helps young people develop essential life skills.
The award challenges young people to engage in a personal journey and by choosing activities for each section of the award, young people are able to design their own award journey.
As award participants, they have the chance to:
- Design their own award programme
- Set their own goals
- Record their progress
- Make a positive impact on the lives of others through volunteer service
- Learn valuable, practical and social skills for career enhancement
