Thank you for choosing Thomas More College, a school governed by our Christian–based ethos and the importance of family values. These are paramount in assisting to prepare your child for the future.
Although Thomas More College is the largest independent school in KwaZulu-Natal, it functions in three phases, allowing the nurturing of the child from Grade 0000 to Grade 12. Each phase specialises in providing for the development of the whole child – academically, emotionally, spiritually and physically. In addition, smaller classes enable teaching to be more personal and caring. In the process of nurturing the whole child, we emphasise the responsibility to be respectful towards others and the right to be respected and to belong. We develop tomorrow’s leaders today through our inspired programme.
We believe that co-educational schooling benefits pupils because they learn to interact naturally with each other, enabling them to integrate into society more easily, later on. Professor Alan Smithers of the University of Buckingham believes that “there is simply no overwhelming evidence that single-sex education is better academically for young people. On the other hand, abundant evidence exists that children do better socially if they are educated in mixed groups.” In addition, Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Professor of Developmental Psychopathology at the University of Cambridge, maintains that “A strong reason for co-education is that separating children for a number of years means they will not be mixing and learning about each other.”
The school is extremely well-resourced academically, culturally and on the sports field. On the academic and cultural side, our teachers are dedicated and experienced, ensuring that pupils are given the tools to achieve their goals in an inspired manner. In addition, our sports’ coaches give their time and expertise helping pupils to develop on-field skills and behaviour. Likewise, our cultural programme and offerings are rich and diverse. At the core is our commitment to providing an all-round education. Our pupils learn to juggle priorities and to have a full life with the support of a dedicated and highly experienced staff behind them.
